I have a question regarding Surah Al Nisa verse 34. The verse states that men have authority over women and if women do not listen to their husbands or fulfill their duties they should be admonished, turned away in bed, and lastly they should be hit. Which kind of women exactly is the Quran referring to? Because I do not understand what is meant by not fulfilling their duties.
Additionally, in the last part of the verse it says that if the women continue to be disobedient the husbands should hit them. Can this last part of the verse be explained? Especially in a modern day context? How exactly is the hitting supposed to be carried out in order for it to be effective? I don’t understand what is meant by “hit lightly” and how it’s effective.
And why does the Quran say such a statement regarding how to treat wives? But the Quran does not state such rights wives have over their husband? Could you explain this verse and my queries because it can be taken out of context and misused or not understood correctly.
