I have a question about a unique situation I am facing and would greatly appreciate your guidance. When I turned 18, my father gifted me two homes as investment properties. I did not work for or contribute any money toward these homes—they were purchased entirely with my father’s money. My father has since rented out these properties, and I receive the rental income from the tenants each month. My father has instructed me to save all the rental income and not spend it, except for really essential needs, with the intention of eventually using it to purchase another investment property. However, my father does not pay khums, and I am unsure whether I am obligated to pay khums on the rental income, given that I am not permitted to spend it freely? And paying khumus on it would be a large chunk of money that he wouldn’t allow me to spend. Am I required to pay khums on this money, and if so, how should I handle this situation in light of my father’s instructions?
